GENOME INDIA DATABASE

 





 



In News: India has released a year-long database of 10,000 human genomes representing 83 population groups, or 2% of the country's 4,600 population groups, that will serve as a model for future disease and drug therapy research.


About Genome India Database 

The Genome India Project is a initiative by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), launched in 2020, aimed at cataloging the genetic variations of the Indian population. This ambitious project seeks to create a comprehensive reference genome by sequencing 10,000 genetic samples from citizens across India. The primary objective is to understand the genetic diversity within the country, which is crucial for advancing personalized medicine, enhancing disease prevention strategies, and fostering biomedical research.
